Dentures are a great dental restoration option for people with missing teeth. In addition to improving the mouth’s appearance and functionality, it can also improve speech, support facial muscles, and increase self-confidence. But how often do you need to have them replaced? Read on to learn about how long dentures in Montgomery, MN should last, and some reasons you may need to get new ones.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Depending on the quality of the materials, and how they are cared for, dentures can last anywhere from 7-10 years. Once they reach the point where they are over a decade old, it is probably time to go to your dental office and have them assessed. You may need them to be replaced if they aren’t functioning properly anymore.

When Should I Have My Dentures Replaced?

There are a variety of reasons that would suggest that you should go to the dentist to have your dentures adjusted, repaired, or replaced entirely. Here are the most common reasons:

Too Loose

If your dentures are too loose, they can easily become dislodged when you are trying to use them. This can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing if you are trying to speak or eat. Usually, loose dentures are a result of bone resorption and can be resolved by relining or replacing them.

Too Tight

If you don’t wear your dentures for a while, the shape of your mouth can change. This can make the dentures feel tight or not sit quite right. It could even cause you pain when it’s inserted. You will need to see your dentist to get new dentures that fit properly.

Broken Teeth or Components

Even if your artificial teeth are made out of porcelain, they are still able to chip. It’s also possible for the metal and acrylic components to break. If any of this occurs, you will need to see your dentist to have the damaged assessed. They will either need to be repaired or replaced depending on the severity.

Damaged Base

If the base of a denture is broken, it is no longer functional. You will need to get new dentures.

Stained Dentures

Even if they are functioning properly, after many years, stains can appear. Unfortunately, many of them cannot be removed.

Pain or Discomfort

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort with your dentures, it could be a sign that they are either broken or not fitting properly. Take them to your dentist to have them assessed. You may need a replacement.

Having denture problems can be a pain. Fortunately, you can easily have them replaced with dentures in Montgomery, MN. Talk to your dentist about any issues that you are having. You’ll be back to eating your favorite foods in no time!
