A tooth-friendly Thanksgiving feast for good oral health

As the holiday season approaches, the Thanksgiving feast draws all the attention with its cornucopia of flavors. While indulging in the festivities, it’s important to consider your oral health. That may sound boring, but fear not! With a few simple, tooth-friendly swaps, you can elevate your Thanksgiving experience without compromising the health of your pearly whites.

Continue reading to find three small food swaps that will keep your teeth intact this Thanksgiving.

1. Swap Out Wine for Water

This one might be the most painful for some. Spiced wine is a holiday favorite and goes great with a heavy feast of fats and protein. However, alcohol is known to prohibit your saliva production and erode your teeth. These two things together are a recipe that’s way better for plaque and bacteria than for you.

Instead, drink more water! If that sounds too unappealing, you can always elevate it. Infuse the water with fruit of cucumbers by leaving it to sit overnight in the refrigerator. This provides a healthy and refreshing alternative.

2. Nix the Sugary Pie and Grab Pumpkin

Nothing says Thanksgiving like a table full of various pies. Pecan is one of the most popular this time of year. However, each slice of pecan pie is loaded with sugar. The bacteria in plaque love to eat sugar, it’s what helps them multiply and create acid to make cavities.

Instead of going with sugar-laden fillings, reach for the tried-and-true pumpkin pie instead. Pumpkin pie is rich in nutrients your teeth need to build strong enamel like potassium, calcium, and vitamin A.

3. Present Crisp Veggies Instead of Chips

Everyone loves a good chip. It’s crispy, crunchy, and comes in a variety of flavors. However, these tasty little morsels are packed with starch and the crunch makes them hard on your tooth enamel. If there’s anything that plaque loves to eat more than sugary pie, it’s starchy potato chips.

Instead, break out the fruit and vegetable trays! Celery, apple slices, and carrots are all great alternatives that give a crunch while being tooth-conscious. Pair them with a little ranch, peanut butter, or even caramel dipping sauce and you’ll have a star snack attraction.

Eating healthy and taking care of your oral health shouldn’t have to be uninspired. Simple swap-outs can make your Thanksgiving feast delightful and nutritious! If you’re concerned with something you normally make for your feast, give your dentist a call. They may have some more ideas for alternatives. While you’re on the phone, schedule your next appointment!
