Seasonal Stressors: How the Holidays Impact Your Oral Health

For most, the holidays are a time for family togetherness and joy. However, ‘tis also the season for stress as you buzz around in an attempt to get gifts and make plans with relatives. While the toll this stress takes on your body can be obvious, it’s also surprisingly bad for your oral health.

If you want to learn how holiday stress can impact your mouth and the snowy whites inside, continue reading.

1. Grinding Through the Season

Holiday stress can manifest as teeth grinding or clenching, known as bruxism. This can lead to tooth sensitivity, jaw pain, and even worn-down enamel. Consider stress-relief techniques like deep breathing or taking a warm bath to alleviate tension.

2. Forgetting Oral Health Care

Increased stress may lead to neglecting your oral hygiene routine. Skipping brushing or flossing sessions can allow plaque to build up on your teeth. Afterward, cavities and gum issues will abound as the bacteria settles and spreads. Continue your dental care, even during busy times, to keep a healthy smile.

3. Running to Comfort Foods

During stressful times, many turn to their favorite comfort foods to help them cope. Unfortunately, the holidays often supply ample opportunities for stuffing your mouth full of treats.

However, try to refrain from using food as a crutch. The sugar and acid in many seasonal comfort foods can do a lot of damage to your oral health. Enamel erosion and cavities are common on first trips back to the dentist when the holidays are over.

4. Developing Canker Sores

Stress is linked to the development or aggravation of canker sores. These painful ulcers are usually formed through trauma—biting your cheek, scraping your gums, or brushing too hard. However, they are also present when cortisol (the stress hormone) levels get too high.

While they’re not contagious, they can make eating and oral care very uncomfortable. If you find yourself with a canker sore, try your best not to eat any spicy foods or brush over them while cleaning your teeth.

5. Weakened Immune System and Gum Disease

Chronic stress weakens the immune system, making you more susceptible to oral infections. Gum disease is one such infection that stems from bacteria found in plaque. To avoid contracting this harmful and irksome disease, ensure that you’re still brushing and flossing every day.

While the holiday season can be stressful, being mindful of its effect on your oral health allows you to take proactive measures. Prioritize self-care, maintain your oral hygiene routine, and seek professional advice if stress-related oral health issues develop. This way, you can navigate the holidays with a healthy and confident smile.
